Tips on Kids Ski Clothes, Kids Ski Wear and Kids Ski Gear

With skiing being such a popular winter sport, finding kids ski clothes, kids ski wear and kids ski gear is usually no problem.
In fact, the problem is that there is so much choice… both on-line and off-line.
Just like adults, children want to look cool on the slopes. Kids ski wear should therefore not only be warm, comfortable and waterproof, it should be smart too.
Sounds expensive, I can hear you say. It doesn’t need to be.
Here you will find helpful tips on ski clothes for kids and what you really need to bring on a family ski vacation, whether it is for a day trip or a whole week on the slopes.
Kids Ski Clothes - Ski Jackets, Pants and Suits
Avoid buying the latest and most fashionable kids ski clothes, as these tend to be quite expensive. Instead buy good quality waterproof, wind resistant and insulated kids ski jackets and ski pants or kids ski suits in neutral, unisex colours such as red, dark blue, green or black. These will stand the test of time, last for more than one season and can easily be handed down to the next child in your family, whether it is a boy or a girl.
Kids Ski Clothes - Ski Gloves and Ski Socks
If your children want to make a bit of a fashion statement, then add a set of ski gloves and a kids ski helmet in cool colours to the outfit. These will keep them warm and safe – and make them look smart too.
Kids ski gloves is a must have and they should likewise be waterproof, wind resistant and insulated. The gloves should ideally overlap with the cuffs of your child's ski jacket, to stop snow from coming inside the sleeves.
Proper kids ski socks is also a must have. They are thick and comfy and will keep your little one's feet much warmer than ordinary socks.
Kids Ski Clothes - Dress Your Kids in Layers
Being comfortable and warm, without over-heating, is very important. It is therefore recommended to dress your children in several thin layers made from natural fibers such as merino, as it allows the body to “breathe”.
Merino is one of nature's wonder fabrics. It feels silky soft against the skin, absorbs body moisture, insulates and keeps your children warm – all day long. In addition, merino is stylish enough for both the slopes and for après-ski.

The number of layers your children will need under their ski jacket or ski suit depends on where and when you are skiing. If it is a sunny and warm day, they may just need a long sleeved top. However, if it is a cold day, you may want to dress them in several thin layers.
Inner Layer:
The inner layer, that is, long tops and bottoms, should ideally be made from a breathable fabric, as this will transport moisture away from the body and eliminate that cold, clammy feeling. Thermal underwear or tops and bottoms made from lightweight merino will keep your little ones snug and comfortable, while they are exploring the slopes.
Middle Layer:
On a cold day your kids may also want to wear a middle layer. This could be several layers of lightweight merino, one layer of midweight merino, a turtleneck or a thin fleece.
Outer Layer:
The final outer layer should be a high quality waterproof and wind resistant ski jacket and pants or a one piece kids ski suit with snug cuffs at the wrists and ankles.
If you dress your children in layers, then they can always remove one if they get too hot. It is much more difficult for them to add an extra layer if they are already cold.
Kids Ski Clothes - Ski Goggles and Sunglasses
Proper sun protection is very important, even on overcast and cloudy days. The sun is stronger than you think, especially in New Zealand, and your kids can easily get sunburnt while skiing in the mountains. Therefore, make sure that you bring sun screen and lip balm when you are skiing, so you can re-apply it when needed.
Equally important is good eyewear protection. Do make sure that your children always wear a pair of high quality ski goggles or sunglasses. Kids ski goggles with an anti-fog finish and 100 percent protection from the suns damaging UV rays are ideal, as these ensure that your children can see clearly, making skiing a lot more fun and safe!

Kids Ski Clothes and Ski Gear - Renting vs Buying
If this is your first family ski holiday you may want to start out by renting all the childrens ski clothes and ski gear, until you are sure that this is the sport for you and your family. Children grow fast and what fits them today – may not fit them tomorrow! – or by the end of the ski season. A good way to save a bit of money is therefore to hire all kids ski wear and kids ski gear at a ski shop near the ski resort or at the ski resort itself.
However, if you do plan to buy all the required ski gear and ski clothes for your kids then consider buying them in the off season, that is, in spring or autumn when the sales are on. It really pays to shop around, both on-line and off-line. Do not buy kids ski clothes and ski gear in the middle of the ski season, as this is when they are most expensive.
No matter what you decide to do, make sure you get some expert advice.
Skiing is a great way to spend some quality time as a family, and it opens up a world of stunning scenery, adventure, fun and laughter.
